In Astroempires you can do research to unlock technologies that will allow you to unlock new ships, new structures and new technologies. Each technology also increases something in your empire. For example, every time you upgrade your Laser technology, all ships that use Laser weapons permanently receive a 5% bonus to power.

All technologies but the Armor, Computer, and Energy technologies require various technologies to be researched to a certain level before you can research them. Technologies also require Research Labs to be at certain levels before you can research them. For example, if you wanted to research the Laser technology, you would need a planet with 2 Research Labs and two levels in Energy to research it.

Energy technology gives a permanent 5% bonus to all energy structures per level.

Energy is one of the most critical technologies in the game, as it can quickly be researched to high levels due to a very small cost and gives a significant bonus to energy output. In the beginning stages of the game, this technology is crucial to research, as it is the prerequisite for Stellar Drive and Warp Drive. Should be researched all throughout the game no matter what lvl you are.

Computer technology is also one of the most important technologies for Astro Empires. Computer tech allows you to have one extra Fleet and commander per level.

A high computer level is crucial in the beginning of the game, as it is needed to increase the number of Campaign Fleets.

Armor is a very useful technology to research, as it gives a 5% bonus to all units, both ships and defenses.

Each level of Laser increases Laser Weapons Power by 5%.

Laser is a very important technology, as it increases the damage of fighters, the arguably best unit in the game. So best researched to very high levels.

[edit] Missiles

Each level of Missiles increases Missile Weapons Power by 5%.

Missile technology is one of the less useful technologies, as the only units in the game to employ them are Bombers, Frigates, Carriers and Missile Turrets, all of which are considered poor units. so should only be researched to low levels.

[edit] Stellar Drive

Each level increases Stellar Units travel Speed by 5%.

Stellar Drive is one of the more specialized technologies, as it is mostly employed by also specialized units such as the Corvette, Destroyer and Frigate. Stellar Drive does make reprisal with Recyclers using it, though, and should be researched to mid-high levels.

Each level increases Plasma Weapons Power by 5%.

Plasma is one of the top technologies to warlike players, as the arguably most useful units in the game use it, namely the Cruiser and Heavy Cruiser. Plasma is generally researched to very high levels.

Each level increases Warp Units travel Speed by 5%.

Warp Drive affects the speed of most units in the game, and is thus a quite useful technology that should be researched to high levels.

Each level increases Units and Defenses Shield Strength by 5%. This is critical to research as it improves the shielding of everything from the cruiser to the death star.

Each level increases Ion Weapons Power by 5%. Rather unimportant as the only useful unit that uses this technology is the Battleship.

Each level increases Photon Weapons Power by 5%. Extremely important, this affects Planetary rings the best defense, Dreadnoughts, and Leviathans the latter being the best capital ship in the game.

[edit] Artificial Intelligence

Each level increases all Bases Research Output by 5%. Very useful as this cuts drastically into research times, if researched to twenty in effect each research lab will give you 12 research points.

[edit] Disruptor

Each level increases Disruptor Weapons Power by 5%. Used by titans, which are fairly underused, Disruptor turrets, which are mere stepping stones for Planetary rings, and Death Stars, which are unbeatable at defense but are useless on the offense due to their lack of speed.

[edit] Cybernetics

Each level increases all Bases Construction and Production Output by 5%. Very important, without this you cannot build Orbital ship yards, which without you cannot build Capital ships. Also they greatly speed up your production and construction.

Each level allows creating 1 research link between 2 bases (min labs 20 at each base). This cuts into research time so greatly that you simply can't pass it up, combined with Research Commanders and Artifical intelligence you can research at speeds that were never before possible.
